Holy Toledo

Our first major release from Wellstone Books, published in September 2013, was Holy Toledo!: Lessons from Bill King, Renaissance Man of the Mic, Ken Korach’s book about the legendary Bill King, whose amazing life story has inspired people who care little about sports as well as those who grew up following Bill on the radio. This man knew how to paint pictures with words, and blended passion and precision in his work. Bill lived large. He loved to sail with his longtime companion Nancy and was never happier than out on the water or home in Sausalito getting ready to head out again.

He taught himself Russian and read widely on Russian history. He was also into art and painted himself – see his painting below, provided for our use by his step-daughter Kathleen Lowenthal. The book also features cover art by Mark Ulriksen, whose distinctive New Yorker covers have made his style familiar to many. Ken, a great broadcaster in his own right and Bill’s longtime partner, worked hard to conduct close to 100 interviews for the book, which was the No. 1-selling baseball book at Amazon for the first 29 days after it was published. For updates on the book, you can check out the Facebook page for Holy Toledo! or visit the book website.
